Alyson Brody

Brief Biography:

I am a freelance gender and development consultant, with a doctorate in Social Anthropology. The former senior manager of BRIDGE and former board member of GADN, I have a track record of leading innovative research and knowledge programmes and developing ground-breaking publications that have influenced policy and practice. I have collaborated with a wide range of organisations, including NGOs, bilateral and multilateral agencies, and universities. Freelance consultancies have included gender country assessments for the Asian Development Bank in Georgia and the Kyrgyz Republic and for the European Union in Mongolia; supporting gender mainstreaming for the Commonwealth Secretariat; and a qualitative gender analysis for the Tropical Health and Education Trust. These have required a highly developed capacity to gather, analyse, assimilate and synthesise a large amount of qualitative and quantitative data from multiple sources that include data sets, literature, key informant interviews, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.

Areas of Expertise:

Specific experience in gender analysis; participatory action research; gender mainstreaming; organisational learning. Thematic expertise on gender-based violence; children’s rights; women’s political participation; trafficking and migration; health; food security and climate change.  I have specialist knowledge of Southeast Asia (particularly Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar), Central Asia (Mongolia, Georgia, Kyrgyz Republic) and East and West Africa (Kenya, Senegal, Benin, Mali). I am fluent in French and Thai.
