Submission to the International Development Committee on the impact of the UK aid cuts

May 2021

In response to the rapidly changing news about cuts to the UK aid budget, the International Development Committee put out a call for evidence on the impact of the UK aid cuts.

GADN and GAPS - as co-chairs of this year’s Women 7 (W7) - made a joint submission focusing on the UK’s role as the host of the 2021 G7, in the context of the aid cuts. The submission covers the following:

  • The failure of the UK Government’s seven priority areas for its Official Development Assistance (ODA) allocations in 2021-2022 to address the most pressing global challenges.

  • The stark distinction between the UK’s rhetoric on gender equality and the corresponding reality, in terms of funding allocations.

  • The lack of transparency and consultation in relation to the aid cuts.

  • The likely impact of the aid cuts on women and girls.

It concludes with a set of recommendations for the UK Government.
